Ich will doch nur, daß ihr mich liebt | Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1976

In een interview met een klas schoolkinderen in 1979 antwoordde Rainer Werner Fassbinder als volgt op de vraag hoe zijn perfecte zondagochtend eruit zou zien:

Caviar, champagne, the Eighth Symphony of Mahler, “radio activity” by Kraftwerk, the Sunday Bild paper, a book so exciting you don’t want it to end, a friend, a good friend, and the possibility of unplugging the phone.

Er zijn weinig fanatiekere filmfanaten dan Fassbinder geweest, maar het is belangrijk om het essentiële onderscheid tussen film en films in te zien. Een ideeënloze sukkel als Quentin Tarantino houdt van films, Fassbinder hield van film. George Clooney staat erom bekend dat hij vrienden voor hun verjaardag de complete Criterion collectie cadeau geeft – Clooney houdt duidelijk van films. Maar Godard, die alles zag en alles wist en over alle films schreef (goed of slecht, true of false), houdt van film. Waar dat toe leidt – een liefde voor film, maar niet noodzakelijkerwijs voor films – blijkt uit de notitie die Fassbinder maakte toen hij in 1982 met gepaste tegenzin naar het filmfestival van Cannes ging:

But suddenly I had another idea – call it crazy if you like, maybe it is. I had the idea of not watching any movies in Cannes. For one thing, they begin at a specific time, and for another thing, I found the notion of getting an impression of films only through people who had seen them incredibly exciting. In this way I hoped to learn more, or at least something different, about film in itself and its effect on people than if I’d seen those films myself.
